U.S. MODEL 1861 CAP BOX
US Model 1861 Civil War Union Cap Box. Has " U.S." stamped on the front flap. No other markings present. Capacity of about 200 Musket caps or many more Pistol caps. The original wool, from a strip of sheepskin sewn on the back of the box is still present. The wool prevented the caps from bouncing. It also has the original cone pick, seated in the leather loop in the back corner of the box. The inner flap had two ears to protect the caps from rain or debris. These cap boxes were made by a wide variety of manufacturer's. Many were unmarked. After the Civil War,a large number was converted into pistol cartridge pouches. This one is original and in excellent condition.
